About this Role
As a senior service designer at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), you will join an established team of service designers working at the forefront of our digital Transformation program. You will work alongside our Strategic Delivery Partner to deliver radical changes to our services that meet the needs of our customers and our colleagues. Looking forwards, you will be an integral member of Continuous Improvement teams, iterating and maintaining services, being a champion of all thing’s user centred design.
You will drive the professionalisation and maturity of the service design practice through peer support, tutoring and mentoring of others in the team, and define standards and best practice.
Service designers within the IPO are multiskilled individuals covering a range of Digital, Data and Technology user-centred design job family roles including:
- content design
- interaction design, and
- service design
Larger government departments and agencies tend to recruit the specific professions, but as we are a smaller agency, as a community our designers have developed areas of specialisms across the user-centred design job family.

Person Specification
- Experience of user centred-design deliverables, for example service blueprints, user flows, process flows and site maps
- Experience of leading community of practice activities
- Experience of mentoring and coaching designers across the user-centred design profession
- Experience of working in an agile, multi-disciplinary team environment; able to deliver iterative design components as part of a project team
- Experience in writing plain English content that is accessible, usable and complies with GDS writing style
- Experience of working with the GOV.UK Design System, Service Manual and design principles including recommending new patterns or updating exiting patterns into the GOV.UK design system
- Experience of working with prototyping tools, including GOV.UK prototype kit and Adobe XD
- Knowledge and experience of HTML/CSS
- Experience of facilitating design activities with others
- Experience of using data to inform design decisions
- Experience of designing accessible solutions, across a range of channels, to meet customer needs
- Experience of conducting usability testing, either directly or alongside user researchers
