NHS Digital

About The Role

Do you believe in improving lives through data and technology? Do you enjoy uncovering user needs to understand complex problems?

NHS Digital’s Product Development directorate is growing, and we are looking for a Lead Service Designer to join our team.

We craft products and services – such as the NHS website, the NHS App and NHS login – that are useful, inclusive, easy to use and deliver better outcomes for the people that use them. We make sure people are at the heart of our work, whether it’s supporting the digital transformation of cancer or cervical screening programmes, or designing and delivering the technology that has supported the response to COVID-19.

You will have an inclusive, user-centred approach and will enjoy adapting and learning at pace. You will be welcomed into a supportive design community with plenty of opportunity to collaborate and problem-solve with colleagues in NHS Digital and partners across the health and care system. And you will see real outcomes. The work you do will have an impact on a national scale, helping our NHS achieve amazing things for patients and health and care staff.

As a Lead Service Designer you will be responsible for:

  • Service design leadership, collaborating with product management to define a vision for services, and share it in a way others can understand.
  •  Ensuring the needs of users, and organisational objectives are met.
  • Using research evidence, design knowledge, and negotiation with senior stakeholders to achieve good health outcomes for the public.
  • Communicating with design teams so they understand organisational goals.
  • Advocating for and implementing inclusive working practices.Developing a supportive design culture, which might involve organising professional conferences, informal local design meetings and workshops, and online discussions.

About You

Some of the key skills and experience you’ll bring:

  • Experience in service design at a senior practitioner level, with a solid understanding of organisational design, interaction design or graphic design.
  • Experience in developing a vision for services in collaboration with product managers and creating a service design strategy on how to get there for other designers to follow.
  • Experience in leading user-centred service design, in agile, multidisciplinary teams with a focus on accessibility and inclusive design.
  • Experience in a relevant working environment or have qualifications equivalent to a master’s level.
