Service Designer
Dartington Service Design Lab
Responsible to the SMT to work as part of the team integrating Design
approaches with evidence-informed social science and research approaches
and systems thinking methods. Facilitating an inter-disciplinary, participatory
approach to service design, systems change and place-based efforts, striving
to improve outcomes for children and families.
Key responsibilities:
• Design skills: Apply both technical and conceptual skills to internal
strategy, long-term projects, or internal initiatives; support others to
develop their skills and practice.
• Service design and improvement: Working with service providers and
communities to co-create new services and supports, or to improve
elements of an existing service architecture. Using and developing robust,
ethical, and collaborative design processes, from project conception,
planning, delivery, production of outputs, dissemination, embedding and
evaluation.
• Collaboration: Work independently and be able to work meaningfully
with other designers, researchers, and relevant project stakeholders,
including young people and families.
• Equity and anti-racism: Continually strive to embed an equitable and
anti-racist approach to all Design activities, using reflection and feedback
to maintain accountability.
• Community engagement: Design and deliver safe, effective, and
culturally sensitive community engagement sessions, including with
vulnerable young people and their families. Translate their stories and
views to develop approaches or services that meet the needs identified
and support families to thrive.
• Synthesis: Oversee the collation, analysis, and synthesis of insights into
opportunities and design concepts, supporting others to meaningfully
contribute to this process and subsequent outputs.
• Evidence Translation: Create high-quality evidence- and context-based
designs; able to value and interpret evidence-based research and
incorporate this into the work.
• Testing and implementation: ensure concepts and propositions are
prototyped, tested and that implementation is supported, and learning
captured for future work.
• Communication: Be responsive and communicate effectively across the
organisation and external partners/clients.
Learning: Learn from the team and sector; contribute to the internal and
external learning processes, approaches and platforms.
• Multitasking: Manage various dependencies across teams/projects
whilst working within practical project constraints.
• Design culture: Support a deepening of design culture in the
organisation that enables high quality multi-disciplinary working.
• Conceptual Thinking: Overseeing and contributing to the development
of design concepts in projects, initiatives, and internal strategy.
• Leadership: lead on multiple or highly complex tools, products and
service development, support others to develop abilities with this.
• Software: Fast and fluid in the use of design software or other relevant
digital tools
