The Salary X-Ray is the second panel on a job page. It puts one number next to the listing: the median base salary for that seniority in that country, reported by the people who do the work. Here is what goes into that number.
The Panel
What it shows
Each benchmark shows four things, and the panel says where the number came from.
Median
The middle of the survey distribution for this seniority and country. Half of respondents earn more, half earn less.
Range
The band from the 25th to the 75th percentile. Half of respondents fall inside it.
Sample Size
How many respondents sit behind the numbers. The panel shows the count so you can judge it yourself.
Survey Year
The edition of the Salary(+) Report the benchmark was drawn from.
The panel appears on job pages next to the Job X-Ray, whenever the listing's country and seniority are known. Where a full report exists for the benchmark, the panel links to it.

Provenance
Where the data comes from
The figures come from the Service Design Salary(+) Report, a survey of service design professionals. Respondents report their own pay, seniority, and country, and the benchmarks are computed from those answers.
None of it comes from the listing. The employer's own figure, when one is stated, sits in the Job X-Ray above. The two numbers are different things: what this employer offers, and what survey respondents reported.
A median is the middle answer, not an average. One very high response does not drag it up, which is why we use it.
Honest Limits
What it does not do
The benchmark describes the market. It does not predict what this role will pay, and it is not an offer. Employer size, sector, and scope move real numbers around the median.
The range covers half of respondents. The other half sits outside it, so offers beyond Low and High happen.
